

Music is a discipline which is widely accepted as a source of acquiring internal peace. India has a rich history of music in the form of various Gharanas. Since ancient times, it was taught through Guru-Shishya tradition in a non-formal way, but of late, it is also taught through the university system.
Music is an area of knowledge which opens many ooportunities for jobs in the field of teaching, media, entertainment, dance and drama and film industry. Realising its importance in a girls' college, music was introduced as a subject in Bhagini Nivedita College in 1999. It was transformed in to a Discipline Course (Instrumental Music) under the B.A Programme in 2004.
Music department of the college has a team of two dedicated faculty members and a tabla player. Students in the first year are taught the basics of music and biographies of well known musicians. In the second year, students learn history of music, whereas verious ragas and talas are taught in the third year.
The most exciting ascpect of music subject, which the students enjoy thouroughly, is the learning of sitar. The college has got a well-equipped music lab, having twenty sitars, several sets of tablas and harmoniums and a latest music system, that helps students learn music better and faster.
Introducing music subject in the college has proved to be a good decision, as over the years students have not only made good career in various fields, but have also excelled in their academic pursuits. It has also proved to be a great boon in enriching the cultural environment of the college.
